What is a plumbing answering service?
A plumbing answering service picks up a plumbing company’s calls when nobody in the shop can — at night, at weekends, or while everyone is under a sink. A good one tells a burst pipe from a billing question, takes the caller’s name, number and address, and gets real emergencies to whoever is on call.
One call, start to finish, in under a minute
A leaking water heater at night, taken the way it’s taken on a Wakeman line: what’s wrong, a safety check for water near electrics, the address read back, and — with booking on — a time in the on-call window.

How these numbers were worked out
SearchLight, which sells ad-tracking software to contractors, published these in its February 2026 Local Services Ads benchmark: 230 plumbing accounts, out of 888 contractors with 126,650 leads and $52.7M in closed revenue. Closed revenue per lead is SearchLight’s 6.85× return on ad spend times its $57 cost per lead. It is much lower than the booked share times the average job, because not every booked lead turned into a paying customer. SearchLight’s clients track their ads closely, which may make the numbers look better. Revenue it could not match to a lead is left out, which makes them look worse.
From October 1, 2026, Google charges for some missed calls too: during your business hours, a Local Services Ads caller who waits more than 20 seconds counts as a lead even if nobody answers. What that costs
How Wakeman sorts plumbing calls
Not all of them should wake you. A generic answering service takes four messages and sends four texts. Wakeman works out which call is which — and it goes by what is actually wrong, not by how upset the caller sounds.
“There's water pouring out from under the sink, it's everywhere”
EmergencyTells them how to shut the water off first, rings your on-call phone during the call, and takes down the address and the job.
“The sewage is backing up into the downstairs shower”
EmergencyTells them to keep everyone away from it, rings your on-call phone during the call, and takes down the details.
“My water heater's leaking a bit, no rush”
UrgentTakes the job down for the morning. With booking on, it offers a time from the list you set; it doesn’t see your Jobber calendar.
“I'm calling about an invoice from last month”
AdminTaken as a message for the office in the morning. Billing questions don’t go to your on-call phone.
- Rings your on-call phone: gas, carbon monoxide, fire or smoke, water near electrics, major flooding and sewage backups.
- How it knows: it listens for those words. A caller who describes it differently may be marked urgent instead.
- Urgent calls (an ordinary leak, no heat) get a text, not a ring. So does an on-call phone that is the same line you forward to Wakeman.
- No on-call number set? It won’t tell the caller help is on the way.
- It’s a safety net. It doesn’t replace 911.
An AI receptionist for plumbers
Call it an answering service or a virtual receptionist — the job is the same. Wakeman is set up for plumbing work and your own list of services. It asks what a good dispatcher would: what’s wrong, how bad it is, the address and a number to call back. It checks the address, then texts you the job, or books it into Jobber once you switch booking on. It says it’s an AI at the start of every call, and a caller who asks for a person a second time is put through to your on-call phone.
| Wakeman | A live answering service | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | From $149 a month with minutes included, then $0.59 / $0.39 / $0.29 a minute by plan | Roughly $1.32–$5.00 per included minute on published plans |
| Spam and robocalls | Never billed | Often counted like any other call — ask before you sign |
| A dangerous plumbing call | Safety steps written in advance, and a ring to your on-call phone during the call | Depends on the script and the escalation rules you set up with them |
| Into your schedule | Takes the job down; books into Jobber once you switch booking on | Ask whether they write into your field-service software |
Live answering service prices are from vendors’ own published plans, checked 21–23 September 2026. What every answering service charges
Plumbing work comes in all year, with two sharp emergency spikes: the January freeze and holiday drain failures. Both land outside business hours. A shop that doesn’t answer after hours hands its two best weeks of the year to whoever picks up.
Questions about an AI answering service for plumbers
How should I test a plumbing answering service before relying on it?
Make a few test calls first: a routine repair, a billing question, and one asking for a person twice (it puts a caller through on the second ask, not the first). Check what Wakeman wrote down, and check what reached your on-call phone. Call the Wakeman number directly, then call your own business number from another phone to make sure forwarding works. Leave booking off until you have checked the times it will offer. Keep test calls apart from real ones, and compare real jobs against the whole bill before you decide.
How much does a plumbing answering service cost?
Human answering services work out at roughly $1.32–$5.00 per included minute on their published plans. Wakeman is $149, $349 or $829 a month with 300, 750 or 2,000 minutes included, then 59¢, 39¢ or 29¢ a minute by plan. Spam calls are never billed. You set a monthly spend limit. It is checked after each call ends, so the call that crosses it, and any calls happening at the same time, can take you a little over.
Can it tell a real plumbing emergency from a routine call?
It has safety words written in advance for a gas smell, carbon monoxide, fire or smoke, water near electrics, major flooding and sewage backups. When a caller describes one, Wakeman marks the call as an emergency and rings your on-call phone during the call. It is an AI speaking, so it may not say those words exactly, and we cannot promise the call to your phone gets through. It is a safety net, not an emergency service.
Will it book into my existing scheduling software?
It can write booked jobs into Jobber. Housecall Pro is not generally available yet. Booking is off until you turn it on, because Wakeman doesn’t see your whole Jobber calendar. Once it is on, it offers only the times you have set in Wakeman, and each booked job goes into Jobber.
Do I keep my existing phone number?
Yes. We never move your number away at signup, so leaving is easy if it doesn’t work for you.
What’s the difference between a plumbing answering service and a virtual receptionist?
Mostly the name. An answering service has traditionally meant a call centre taking messages, and a virtual receptionist a remote person or an AI answering as your front desk. What matters is what happens on the call: whether it tells a burst pipe from a routine job, writes the job down properly, and reaches your on-call phone when it should. Wakeman is an AI that does those three things, and it says it is an AI at the start of every call.
Is it a 24/7 plumbing answering service?
It can be. On Front Desk and Dispatch, Wakeman answers the calls your team misses at any hour, day or night. On After Hours it answers only while you’re closed, by the hours you set. Like any phone service it can have an outage, so it doesn’t promise that every call is answered.
Will callers know it’s an AI?
Yes. Every call opens with a short notice that the caller is talking to an AI and that the call is recorded. A caller who asks for a person a second time is put through to your on-call phone.
Is Wakeman an AI receptionist for plumbers or an answering service?
Both names describe the same job, and so does "AI CSR". Wakeman is an AI receptionist: it answers the calls your team misses in your company’s name, and says it is an AI at the start of every call. Like a plumbing answering service or a virtual receptionist, it writes each job down; unlike a message-taking service, it tells an emergency from a routine call and alerts your on-call phone for the dangerous ones.
