Conditional call forwarding codes

Conditional forwarding sends a call on only when you don’t answer, you’re busy or your phone can’t be reached, so your phone still rings first. These are the codes for the main US phone companies, and the code that turns each one off.

Four kinds of forwarding

What most shops want

Don’t answer

Your phone rings first. A call you don’t pick up goes on.

Busy

A call that comes in while you’re on the phone, or one you decline.

Can’t be reached

Your phone is off, or has no signal.

Every call

Your phone doesn’t ring at all. This one isn’t conditional.

The codes, by phone company

Dial them on the phone that’s forwarding. Where it says number, type the 10-digit number to forward to.

Verizon cell phone

Verizon guide
WhenTo turn it onTo turn it off
Don’t answer or busy*71 number*73
Every call*72 number*73

With *71 your phone rings 3 to 6 times first. Dial the codes on the Verizon phone itself; they only forward to US numbers.

T-Mobile and Metro cell phone

T-Mobile guide
WhenTo turn it onTo turn it off
Don’t answer**61*1 number **15###61#
Busy**67*1 number ###67#
Can’t be reached**62*1 number ###62#
Every call**21*1 number ###21#

To set them all back at once, dial ##004#. T-Mobile’s own words for it: “Resets call forwarding to default.”

The 15 is how many seconds your phone rings first: T-Mobile allows 5 to 30.

AT&T and Cricket cell phone

AT&T guide

Don’t answer**61* number *11*15###61#
Busy**67* number ###67#
Can’t be reached**62* number ###62#
Every call**21* number ###21#

AT&T publishes no codes. These are the GSM standard’s, the ones networks like AT&T’s use, so test them with a call from another phone. In the first code, 11 means voice calls and 15 is how many seconds it rings first.

Spectrum Business desk phone

Spectrum guide

Dial the code on the desk phone, and the line asks you for the number.

To hear whether each is on, and where it goes: *61* (don’t answer), *67* (busy) and *21* (every call).

Dial the code on the desk phone, and the line asks you for the number.

Spectrum Mobile cell phone

Spectrum guide
WhenTo turn it onTo turn it off
Don’t answer*71 number*73

Dial it on the Spectrum Mobile phone itself. The account holder can also change forwarding in the My Spectrum app.

Xfinity Mobile cell phone

Don’t answer*71 number*73
Every call*72 number*73

Xfinity says forwarding can only be turned on from the phone itself, and that calls you don’t answer then skip your Xfinity voicemail.

Home phones and landlines

Ask the phone company to switch on “call forward no answer”, and to switch it off when you’re done. Some give you a code for your line instead: use the one they give you, since cell phone codes don’t work on a landline.

An Xfinity home phone has *72 to forward every call, and *73 to stop.

Common questions

What is conditional call forwarding?

Forwarding that sends a call on only in one situation: when you don’t answer, when you’re busy, or when your phone can’t be reached. Unlike forwarding every call, your phone still rings when it can.

How long does my phone ring before the call goes on?

On Verizon, 3 to 6 rings. On T-Mobile and AT&T, it’s the number at the end of the code: 15 seconds in the codes above. T-Mobile allows 5 to 30.

How do I check whether it’s on?

Call your number from another phone and let it ring. On a Comcast Business line, *61*, *67* and *21* tell you whether each kind is on, and where it goes.

Why doesn’t my code work?

Dial it on the phone itself, with every * and # and all 10 digits. A Spectrum Business line may need the feature switched on in the Spectrum Business voice portal first. Smaller cell companies may not offer it: ask yours.
